This parallel character text is provide for teachers and students using Beginning Chinese, also published by Yale University Press. The texts of the companion volumes are identical: dialogues, pronunciation drills, sentence-building exercises, substitution drills, and memorization exercises are printed in Chinese characters in this volume while Beginning Chinese offers the same lessons in English and pinyin romanization of Mandarin. To suit the needs of beginners, characters are presented in a large size and tables show the sequence of strokes used in their formation.
The Supplementary Lessons added to the second revised edition of Beginning Chinese are here written in simplified characters, in contrast to the complex characters of the main body of the text. Two new charts showing both forms for each character provide a valuable aid for users of the text.
