A former British colony, in 1957 Ghana became the first African nation south of the Sahara Desert to win independence from the British Empire. The country's move to freedom inspired other African nations to seek independence as well. In the years since then, Ghana has struggled with political instability and economic troubles, yet it remains a peaceful country. Today, Ghana has an extremely iverse population- more than 50 ehtnic groups live in the country, each with their own lanuage and traditions. However, a sense of nationalistic pride has allowed these groups to live peacefully together while other African nations face racial turmoil, helping Ghana to develop into one of the world's major nations. Ages 9-12
