A whole-word approach to spelling, Sitton Spelling and Word Skills does away with almost all spelling rules, instead advocating common 'core' words presented as whole words so students can gain a correct visual image. Criticizing tests as only good for short-term results that don't translate into actual writing, Sitton Spelling focuses on long-term mastery that does away with the traditional M-Th/Test on Friday. Sourcebook units have two parts: Build skills and word experiences and Assess words and skills. The former focuses on how all words work through learning about how words are correctly used. In the latter, students receive specific spelling words which are identified through whole-class story and dictation tests, where the words they miss become their spelling words. Fifth-grade words include picture, straight, piece, words, let's, quicker, little, mark, mean, and more. A writing-based program, proofreading becomes an important method of assessment, and provides new spelling words; tie-ins to vocabulary, literature, phonics, usage, and writing are also provided with the aim of helping students to master spelling, language and word skills to help them become better writers. Detailed teacher instructions include highlighted primary concepts, and lessons that include what to write on the chalkboard and questions to ask. Unit Assessments check where students are in memorizing the 1200 total core words in this program. Reproducible worksheets and 5 larger classroom word posters included. 408 pages, softcover, spiralbound. Level 5, 5th Grade. 3rd Edition.
