For most of its history, the city of Jerusalem has been considered a holy place, and today three of the world's major religions-Judaism, Christianiy, and Islam-consider it sacred. In the early part of the 20th century, the country of Palestine was hotly contested among different religious groups, each believing that it had the right to establish a religious state in the Holy Land. This contention led to several alliances and arrangements during and after World War I that attempted to come to some resolution of the questions surrounding the stewardship of the Holy Land. Jerusalem and the Holy Land,1914-1920 contains stories of what life was like for the inhabitants of Palestine at the time, including Muslim villagers and Orthodox Jews whose Passover celebration is recounted here.
