Crises give us a unique vantage point into the lives of the characters we read about. This course explores four novels, one play, and an assortment of short stories. Students will read about characters' crises, how they resolve them, and how they are changed by them. Illuminating Literature: Characters in Crisis is the second volume in Sharon Watson's Illuminating Literature series (Following When Worlds Collide [sold-separately]).This book also features the same conversational style tone, which is written directly to the reader; weekly reading schedules and clearly numbered lessons help students complete their assignments on time. Written from a Christian perspective, questions integrated throughout the text draw upon Scripture and ask students to draw spiritual applications to their own lives. Lessons feature 'Before you Read the Book' activities, a chapter on the context and author's life, literary terms and assignments, 'Stuff you'll want to know: chapter by chapter' information, and extensive 'after you read' activities that include quizzes, vocabulary work, and discussion questions. This book instructs students to take quizzes and surveys online, which are automatically graded and return a full emailed report that contains the quizzes' original questions, the student's answers, the correct answers, and the score (opinion surveys do not receive a grade). This textbook contains the link and password to these online resources (separate passwords are given for each quiz, each found in the respective chapter). For those without internet access, or who prefer printed quizzes, the Quiz and Answer Manual is available to purchase separately. One-year (two-semester) course that earns your student one credit in literature, language arts, or English. Grades 9-12. 38 lessons. 293 indexed pages, softcover. Please note that while some selections are included in the textbook itself, or links are given for pieces to read online, some books are required to use this curriculum.
