There is much discussion today about how we are to understand the life of Jesus in the Gospels. What was it about the life of Jesus that was necessary for salvation—from the manger to the cross and everything in between?

Rooted in the Reformed theological tradition and forwarding accessible, clear, and thoughtful biblical scholarship, Brandon Crowe's The Last Adam addresses this debated and too-often-neglected theological theme by considering the theological and soteriological significance of the life of Jesus in the Gospels. Crowe not only considers the Scriptures as a whole, attempting to engage in a biblical-theological understanding of the obedience of Jesus, but also considers relevant texts from the Gospels that speak to the vicarious obedience of Jesus, yielding an inquiry that is primarily exegetical in its perspective.

The Last Adam argues that we find a shared perspective among the diversity of the four Gospels that the obedient life of Jesus—in its entirety—is vicarious and salvific in character. He is the last Adam whose obedience is necessary for God's people to experience the blessing of salvation. Discussing how this argument interfaces with systematic theology and the church's creedal traditions, and covering topics such as Jesus's baptism and temptation, his fulfillment of Scripture, the necessity of his works, the binding of the strong man and the inbreaking of the kingdom, and Jesus's death and resurrection, Crowe's exegetical inquiry forwards a comprehensive contribution to the study of the Gospels and the life of Christ.
