This study is about the dynamics of early Methodist growth in America. Methodism was the largest popular religious movement between the Revolution and the Civil War, expanding on a scale that had never been seen before. It had a profound effect on the development of American culture and society, such that its impact can still be felt today. The bulk of my research focuses on recovering the interpreting the lives of early Methodists, particularly the itinerant preachaers. Through their journals, memoirs, and records, I have tried to piece together the details of their lives, their shifting hopes and fears, their larger influence on the world around them, and it on them.
