The 1970s was a decade of contrasts. Pop music boomed as teenagers swooned over David Cassidy and Donny Osmond, and the Jackson Five burst onto the scene with a lead singer who would become a pop culture phenomenon. Variety was the name of the game at the movies. At one end of the scale were 'serious' pictures such as The Godfather, Taxi Driver, and Serpico, while at the other end of the scale, the 1970's saw the birth of the blockbuster with Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Star Wars. And when John Travolta stepped onto the dance floor in a flared white suit a new craze was born: disco. On television favorites such as Happy Days looked back nostalgically to the 1950's, while Kojak, Columbo, Starsky and Hutch, and Charlie Angels proved there was room for more than one type of TV detective.
