'Useless Ulysses.' That's what most of the other children called Ulysses S.Grant when he was a boy. Although he was constantly teased, Ulysses was determined to succeed. His determination earned him a place at the United States Military Academy at West Point when he was 17. Ulysses became a hero of the Mexican War. Later he earned even greater fame as leader of all the Union armies during the Civil War. In 1869 he became 18th president of the United States.
