Memorization has fallen out of favor, despite the proven benefit of installing a 'database...of reliably correct and sophisticated language patterns.' Students gain increased vocabulary, idiomatic understanding, and an intuitive use of language patterns when they are accustomed to committing works of poetry to memory. The mastery system is employed to help retain memorization of works, with poems recited every day until they are perfected and afterwards to prevent memory losses.
