The book of Galatians is the proclamation of freedom for the church. Paul wrote to refute the diabolical idea that salvation is based on sticking to a religious code. Many of the early Jewish Christians were used to observe the law. Although they had accepted the grace that Christ offered on the cross, some were replacing the gift of God by human effort. Paul points out in his letter that this was legalism. Faith is not enough, argues the legalistic. We must earn God's approval. Some teach that we gain the favor of God for all we know (intellectualism). Others insist that we are saved by what we do (salvation by works). Still others say that salvation is determined by what we feel (emotionalism). 'It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery' (5:1 NIV).
