After he began attending an African-American Church, legendary song-writer and musician Michael Card was struck by a term used by the congregation in worship-'Master.' He learned that slaves in the South used the term to express their independence from the earthly master's, who were not their true master's, and to acknowledge Christ as the true Master. This insight led Card on a journey to understand what it means to call Jesus, Master. A Better Freedom explores the biblical imagery of slavery as a metaphor for Christian discipleship. Card shows how the early church viewed Greco-Roman slavery as a window into understanding Jesus both as a savior who took on the form of a slave, but also the true Lord and Master who sets us free from our own slavery to sin.
