Everyone remembered the year of the earthquake. It had come unexpectedly and shaken the earth, destroying buildings with its irresistible force. In a few, never-to-be-forgotten moments ancient granduer became rubble. The people of God were left stunned. But the earthquake was only physical. Two years before a warning of a deeper shaking of foundations had been given by an obscure farmer from the highlands of Tekoa. Amos appeared to announce a more threatening sound--the voice of God. All round the Near-East the roar of the Divine Lion sounded; Amos heard it and was compelled to prophesy.
