Sounding out Sight Words: A Guide to Teaching the Dolch Words through Phonics teaches children how to sound out 315 Dolch words (the 220 on the Dolch list plus the 95 Dolch nouns) using the concepts taught in the 'Logic of English' program. Sixty-six lessons teach one bite-size phonics concept each day in a two- to ten-minute lesson. Rather than teaching one new sight word each day for sixty-six Dolch words, students gain the tools to read all 315-as well as thousands of other words!
While people are often taught that these words must be taught by sight, not phonics, Logic of English students learn phonics concepts that accurately describe 98% of the words in English-of all the Dolch words and nouns, only 17 have a sound or phonogram that doesn't completely follow the rules, and which needs some additional instruction.
Each lesson introduces one new phonics concept, or occasionally two linked concepts, and has the student practice the concept. The book is a flip-top spiralbound with attached folding stand - each lesson has a student side with a new phonogram or rule and a list of words, and a teacher side with instructions for the day's concepts and words.
This book assumes students know the most common sound of each letter from A to Z and has sufficient phonemic awareness skills to segment words into individual words.
The Logic of English Basic Phonogram Flash Cards, Spelling Rule Flash Cards, Phonogram & Spelling Game Book, and optionally two contrasting decks of Phonogram Game Cards are helpful, but not required.
174 pages, softcover, flip-top spiralbound with folding stand.
