Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation: The Yale Edition of the Complete Works of St. Thomas...
This edition presents a new text of More's greatest English work, written in the Tower of London during the fifteen months that preceded his execution for refusing to bow to the will of Henry VIII. Composed in the full awareness that More was facing possible torture and almost certain death, the treatise is designed to fortify the will of all those facing religious or political persecution, to comfort More's family and friends, and to strengthen his own resolve not to be shaken from the way that he regarded as right. Despite the ominious shadow over its composition, the work is full of 'merry tales,' witty rejoiners, and crisp, humorous dialogue. The new text, based upon the manuscript belonging to Corpus Cristi College, Oxford, greatly enhances the colloquial effect of the dialogue.
