Giving young students an understanding and appreciation of classical music isn't impossible! Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades introduces students in grades K-6 to seven different composers: Bach, Handle, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini and Schubert. Designed to accompany the sold-separately 'Great Musicians' biographies written by Opal Wheeler, children first read the assigned chapters in the books and then complete the student activity workbook exercises.
Covering four weeks per lesson, each lesson in the student activity book begins with an outline of assignments. Comprehension questions, mapwork, writing exercises, and other worksheets are included throughout; other pages provide lessons for children to read on the composer's character qualities, interesting facts, and other biographical, historical, geographical, or musical information. Hands-on activities are also provided. As students learn about each composer in turn, they'll also learn to compare music from different periods, identify music examples, discuss the lives and times of different composers, research and identify different instruments, identify major periods or genres in music, and more.
The lapbook CD includes seven lapbook templates, one for each biography. Easy to assemble, these hands-on lapbooks will help students understand musical concepts, character traits, world geography, and information on the composers' lives. One PDF file is on the CD; the table of contents allows you to easily click on the name of the composer you wish to study. Information on how to create a lapbook is also included along with photos of finished lapbooks; the pages with photos and elements to cut out have instructions on the same page.
The set of music CDs provide the supplemental music that corresponds with the weekly activities given in the workbook. All of the music required is included, along with an additional 35 professionally recorded pieces and an explanation and demonstration of each activity in Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Help build your child's appreciation for classical music and enhance your child's understanding of each lesson!
