Rules of the Game will help students discover that grammar is just another name for patterns in language! This three-book series is a progressive curriculum where each book builds upon the one before. Each book also contains a comprehensive exercise section which provides review exercises. Book 1 is for grades 5-6; Book 2 is for grades 7-8, and Book 3 is for grades 9-10. Each lesson begins with examples and directed questions helping students see that rules and definitions begin with language and aren't arbitrary. Through the directed questions, students learn to see the grammatical rules and principles; exercises (both traditional and non-traditional creative work) then follow to provide practice with those concepts. Students may be asked to follow sentence patterns, write their own sentence, choose effective modifiers or combine sentences. Following the questions and a brief discussion, each lesson has a Definition, set in a box for emphasis. Lessons also contain boxed Hints that aid students in understanding and retaining points of grammar. The topics covered in Book 2 include: direct and indirect objects, linking verbs, predicate nouns and adjectives, appositives, object of the preposition, functions of the prepositional phrase, and semi-colons and colons.
