While Roger Williams has been lauded as an influential figure in American political history, he has been largely ignored as an important contributor to Reformed theology and ethics. Here, however, Davis explores William's thought as a 'moral theology' and uncovers the theological underpinnings on which Williams built his case for religious tolerance. Arguing that William's distinctive theological stance made possible a moral vision that maintained Christian distinctiveness while also permitted cooperation with other worldviews, Davis concludes by providing a constructive sketch of how Christians can do the same in a contemporary setting.
