In David: The Divided Heart, David Wolpe wrestles with the challenges that many commentators encounter when they are faced with the biblical David. On the one hand David is presented as someone who was a mighty warrior loved by all, a unifying king, a poet/musician, a servant of God, and father of the Messianic kingly line. Yet, David is also depicted as an adulterer, a schemer, a plotter of murder, and a negligent father. Drawing from the book of Samuel and a variety of other sources, Wolpe attempts to bring coherence to these seemingly contradictory actions and impulses. As he analysis David’s entire life, the overarching question that he raises is, “Why does David maintain such an exalted and enduring presence in history and religious tradition?” Wolpe asserts that it is actually these flawed characteristics and sinful actions that show him to be human but at the same time loved by God. Despite his many flaws, David never succumbed to idolatry or relinquished his faith in God, things that many both before and after him did throughout history.
