Based on her extensive work as a psychotherapist and a family systems researcher, as well as the loss of her then 22-year-old son, Dr. Becvar offers deep insights into the work of grieving. She says that, as a society, 'We fear death, we deny death, and all too often we do anything we can to avoid getting too close to it until we are confronted with the loss of a loved one. Therefore, we find ourselves somewhat uncertain as we attempt to respond to the pain others may be suffering and we are utterly bereft when the pain is our own.' Her work sheds light on how we can learn to walk with others down the difficult path of bereavement.
