As a planet, the Earth is singular in the universe. So many factors need to be in place if any planet is going to be hospitable to life, and the Earth just happens to have each of these factors in exactly the necessary balance. Guillermo Gonzalez (Ph. D., astronomy, University of Washington) and Jay Richards (Ph. D., philosophy and theology, Princeton Theological Seminary) outline these factors and illustrate how unique our planet truly is - in the solar system, galaxy, and universe. But they go beyond the factors necessary for survival to point out things like the position of the planet to observe celestial events and eclipses, among other things. Assuming an old-earth perspective, Gonzalez and Richards show how we are not simply a cosmic accident but a purposed and purposeful creation.
