St. Nicodemos was born on the island on Naxos in 1749. At the age of 26 he entered the monastery on Mount Athos and devoted himself to a life of asceticism & learning. This work contains Nicodemos' Handbook of Spiritual Counsel, composed during his self-imposed exile on the island of Skyropoula and written during the Age of Enlightenment in western Europe. As a result, his writing shares an exalted vision of human nature, but a vision that proceeds from the truths of revelation as interpreted by the Greek Fathers, and not from Descartes. This exceeds in optimism any enlightened vision of man who, by the powers of reason, perceives the principles by which the universe is ordered.
