Francis Parkman was the son of a Unitarian minister. Born in Boston in 1823, graduated from Harvard, he took advantage of an opportunity to 'go West' in 1846. The great contrast of the raw and dynamic frontier with the tame and settled Northeast opened flood gates of creativity in him, and he wrote vividly of life on the trail.
