Paths of Progress is the third level in the 'Trail Guide to Learning' series from GeoMatters and is written for students in grades 5-7. This unit study focuses on a group of leaders who stepped forward and made great strides of progress-scientists and inventors.
Students will look at how scientists and inventors used their talents and abilities to generate better living and working conditions across the country. From the early stages of the Industrial Revolution to the beginning of the 20th century, lessons focus on these individuals and their contributions, including Ben Franklin, Samuel Morse, George Washington Carver, the Wright Brothers, and Thomas Edison.
The primary science focus involves Physical Science (such as energy, motion, and work) and the economic impact of each development. This full one-year course is targeted for grades 5-7, but the lessons can easily be adapted for 4th and 8th grades by reducing reading assignments, increasing the amount of text the teacher reads, and substituting oral responses for written work for younger students and assigning the included enrichment activities for older students.
This level includes six units, with three units covered in each volume. Each unit contains six lessons with five parts and is designed to take about a week - every 'lesson 6' completes the assignments for the unit and provides a time of review and assessment. Lessons include copywork and dictation exercises, reading assignments from real literature (not included), read-aloud discussion /narration/reflective writing assignments, word study (vocabulary and word building), geography, science, history and economics that are connected throughout this program, and language arts skills of writing, editing, and spelling.
This teacher's guide is laid out for parents to simply 'pick up and go,' with lessons organized around the corresponding student notebook pages (required and sold-separately). 'Steps for Thinking' at the beginning of each lesson present the main ideas about the main topics for that section. A list of materials needed for the lesson makes lesson-prep simple. Little animal-prints for the respective grade levels make it easy to see which information should be given to which student in a multi-grade environment. Lessons are semi-scripted with information to read aloud to students next to a set-apart margin that includes notes to the teacher. This guide also includes a variety of additional lesson helps, tips, and resources for use within the unit.
Appendices include 'lesson at a glance' lesson plans and skills charts for the lessons in that volume as well as a challenge spelling list, presentation feedback sheet, and any necessary game answer keys or materials. A CD-ROM with student resources is also included in the back of the Volume 1.
This set includes:
- Trail Guide to Learning Paths of Progress Volume 1: 400 pages, hardcover with CD-ROM
- Trail Guide to Learning Paths of Progress Volume 2: 398 pages, hardcover
Please note that this curriculum requires additional materials. See the Book List PDF above for a list of required resources.
