Miquon Math is a hands-on math curriculum for Grades 1-3 that helps children actively explore math concepts through movement and doing.

The entire program is comprised of six student books (two for each grade) and three teacher support books (each sold-separately). Cuisenaire rods (sold-separately) are also required to use this program, and provide a physical and visual connection to math concepts.

The Orange Book is the first book for first grade (it is followed by the Red Book [not included] as the second half of first grade). It includes a number of 'lab sheets'- -workbook pages that teach math through creative exploration using hands-on manipulatives. Activities guide students through the learning process, introducing and reinforcing concepts through touch, sight, movement, and mental engagement. This unique combination creates an environment where active minds are encouraged---leading to a greater level of comprehension from the start. Teachers can also pace lessons according to the student; topics can be covered out of order, and students can move as quickly or as slowly as necessary.

Specific skills covered in The Orange Book include:

  • Counting
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Fractions
  • Equalities and Inequalities
  • Number Lines and Functions
  • Geometric Recognition
  • Length, Area, and Volume
  • Clock Arithmetic

Developed by author Lore Rasmussen during her time as a remedial math teacher at the Miquon School during the 1950s, Miquon Math asserts that teaching math to young children cannot only be done through verbal teaching. Rather, it should be a doing, discovering, 'puzzling-out' situation in which children are guided to pose questions, and answer them, in a variety of ways.

Most people find Miquon Math sufficient as a core math curriculum for Grades 1-3, though some parents may choose to also use additional supplemental materials to ensure comprehensive coverage or provide additional practice on specific topics.

Please note that no instructions are provided, and while some lab sheets are self-explanatory some are not; the Miquon Math Lab Sheet Annotations book is considered to be a necessary resource in order to teach this course.
