Throughout Orthodoxy, St. Gregory of Nazianzus is best known as 'The Theologian', a title he shares only with the Evangelist John and St. Symeon the New Theologian. In the West, St. Gregory is best known for his Five Theological Orations, a classic response to the theology of Eunomius, who embraced a late, radicalized form of Arianism known as Anomoeanism. These Festal Orations which developed as a response to Eunomius have shaped the theology and spirituality of the Eastern Churches in ways often overlooked by Western scholars. In the context of these festal proclamations, St. Gregory articulates his own theology while intertwining his pastoral teachings on the devout Christian life.
