Escaping the Holocaust while his parents and younger siblings perished in it's horror, Hirsch recounts his years of growing into adulthood during the pivotal time of the Korean War. While in the US Army, Hirsch never went to Korea but made his way to Germany instead, a road that would lead him to the realization of the fate of his parents and younger siblings. He vividly describes what Army life was like from Basic to discharge. His stint in the Army also introduces him to the life of his uncle Philipp Auerback, who recorded German atrocities that are still denied; that soap was made from some of the bodies of the murdered Jews.
