Columnas de Humo takes place in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1857, during a little known event still present in the city's memory: the yellow fever epidemic. The city's infrastructure progressively unravels with the onslaught of the fever until chaos reigns. At the same time, a Charrúa indigenous man named Ventura Meléndez arrives in Montevideo. Born on the day his people were exterminated through genocide and raised among white people, Meléndez has become a priest. Yet he is torn between love for God and hatred for the white men who annihilated his people. Meléndez sets himself up as a prophet and announces to the people and government authorities of Montevideo that God is using the yellow fever to avenge the massacre of the Charrúa nation, and the entire city will be destroyed.
