Why study rhetoric?
Rhetoric will help students develop skills to communicate powerfully and effectively through both speaking and writing. This introductory course introduces students to expository writing, public speaking, and research papers- - all vital components of a high school and college education- - as well as descriptive essays, journaling, com parison/contrast, analytical essays, and other forms of communication.
Emphasizing the Christian's need for rhetoric in order to advance the Christian worldview, examples provide a look at a number of apologetic issues alongside additional historical or literary examples. Chapters are written directly to the student and feature an introduction to the topic with the assignments for the week clearly laid out.
Thirty-four weekly chapters include four lessons each (45-60 minutes) with objectives and concept-building exercises; a writing assignment is due at the end of the week. Daily 'concept builders' emphasize a concept important to the chapter topic through graphic organizers and reading exercises. Students are also encouraged to write in a prayer journal each day. Starting in chapter 22, students will begin to prepare and write a research paper due at the end of the course.
NIV Scripture used. With all assignments completed, this course equals 1 writing and 1 speech credit. 298 pages, softcover. Junior High: Grades 7-8.
