This volume does NOT contain the entire OT, but only the Pentateuch of 1530, Joshua to 2 Chronicles of 1537, and Jonah (about 1531). The spelling in the texts has been modernized to show them as the modern productions they once were. Tyndale's introductions and marginal notes are also included. David Daniell's introduction explores Tyndale's astonishing achievement in singlehandedly turning the Hebrew into English of great variety, force and beauty. In the 1530's Tyndale translated the first fourteen books of the OT into English from the original Hebrew, a translation that laid the foundation of all subsequent English Bibles, including the Authorized Version (KJV) of 1611. Tyndale was the first to translate the Hebrew Bible into English--the first in fact to translate anything from Hebrew into English. At the time, the language was virtually unknown in England. The publication of Tyndale's OT outraged the clerical establishment by giving people access to the Bible in their own language. Tyndale was hunted down and subsequently burned at the stake for blasphemy. - 10 point text
