In her new, provocative study Tilde Binger offers an exhaustive yet concise survey of Ugaritic (epic, ritual and sacrificial) and biblical texts. Binger raises the critical question of the relationship of Asherah to the God of Israel. The remarkable results are: that Asherah of Syria -Palestine is not a name, but a title; the Asherah of the Old Testament was indeed the consort of Yahweh; and that discussion of these comlicated texts-groups demands great caution.
