This study, unique of its kind, provides a comprehensive survey and analytic account of attitudes to slavery in ancient Greece and Rome. It is commonly assumed that slavery was universally and passively accepted, and that there was no systematic thought on slavery after Aristotle. Both views are challenged here, with the aid of source-material drawn from ten centuries and representing pagan, Jewish and Christian attitudes.
