Bring your creative students' ideas to life with Sharon Watson's Writing Fiction in High School. They'll learn how to write both novels and short stories through two tracks. Over 100 practical lessons teach students how to write engaging dialogue, build scenes, ramp up conflict, create empathetic protagonists, and select a point of view, describe settings, hook readers, critique themselves, get published, and more. Chapters provide instruction in a conversational tone with plenty of literary examples integrated to show well-written prose. Writing assignments are provided, as well as bullet-pointed lists of what the chapter covered. Important terms are bolded. The first track is for all writers of all levels, while the second (extracurricular) 'manuscript track' is for those who have written a manuscript or are writing a manuscript. Designed to work best in a group with discussions and critiques, homeschoolers are encouraged to start their own groups if they're not already working in a co-op class environment, though it may be used in a self-taught environment. Students are assigned some short stories and the novel The Last Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick, which will have to be purchased elsewhere or borrowed from the library. Two-semester course; only the first track is necessary to receive full course completion credits-the second course is designed to be extracurricular. No prerequisites necessary. 286 pages, softcover.
