As a boy, Francis Marion loved to explore the swamps near his family's home in South Carolina. When he grew up he became a part-time soldier. He fought against the Cherokee Indians and learned the Indian ways of moving quietly thorough the woods and surprising the enemy. During the Revolutionary War, Francis formed a group called Marion's Brigade to fight the British. They hid in the swamps and attacked passing British troops by surprise. Francis soon was nicknamed the 'Swamp Fox'.
