Reviewer Raymond E. Brown (Theological Studies) says of this volume in the Hermeneia series, 'Attridge's research is impressively comprehensive; his evaluations are succinct and clear; his disagreements with other scholars are expressed graciously and supported by reasoning. Attridge is adept in retaining what is good from views he does not accept, and so frequently he offers readers a broad, centrist interpretation, escaping idiosyncrasy. This is a commentary worthy of serious discussion - the best that exists in English.'
This is a highly in-depth, technical commentary from a liberal theological perspective. It is a critical and historical commentary which is very well documented and technical. There is a detailed exposition in a verse by verse format. There is much material here which is of use to liberal students and scholars as well as evangelical.
