Jesus didn't use His freedom to express His own selfishness, arrogance, or pride. Instead, He gave us a picture of what true authority really is. It is humility that submits to every human institution on the earth. Jesus, man's creator, chose to humble Himself and submit to His own creation's authority. Interestingly, Jesus had no problem doing what most of mankind struggles with - submission to someone else. The most common temptation of people who are given greater authority is to use it to do whatever they want, claiming freedom as their justification. Jesus, on the other hand, used His freedom to humble Himself and walk in submission to the people He was in authority over. Jesus showed us what true humility and submission look like, and it is quite different from the way most of us see it.
