A bookish professor of classical literature at the University of Romania in Bucharest, Marilena finds herself over whelmed by a maternal instinct that leads her on an odyssey of spiritualism. Hiding her desire from her husband, the enigmatic and aloof Dr. Soren Carpathia, Marilena meets the Russian emigre Viviana Ivinsova, a spiritualist who promises her, her hearts desire--a child.
