The Paths of Settlement: Growing Pains Teacher's Guide is Unit 1 in a series of 6 sold-separately volumes that make up the 'Trail Guide to Learning: Paths of Settlement' series (Grades 4-6). This unit study teaches science, history, language skills, and the arts as students learn about the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and Westward Expansion.
Growing Pains is the first unit of six in the Paths of Settlement series. Lessons cover everyday life and adventure in the colonies against the backdrop of the French and Indian War. As students explore common values and behaviors of the time through George Washington's writings, alongside compelling issues like indentured servitude and cultural differences, students are challenged to discuss and apply concepts within the framework of family ideals. At the same time, since successful colonies were so closely linked to an area's normal conditions, study of the atmosphere, climate, soil, and weather follows naturally. Students research and map states in the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions while learning about igneous rocks and the fun of regional cooking through great games and hands-on activities!
This unit study features an integrated approach to learning where topics flow from one to the next as students focus on one main concept. Units cover language skills (including vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing), copywork and dictation, science, art/hands-on activities, reading, history, and geography (state studies). All core subjects are covered with the exception of math.
This teacher's guide is laid out for parents to simply 'pick up and go,' with lessons organized around the corresponding student notebook pages (required and sold-separately). 'Steps for Thinking' at the beginning of each lesson present the main ideas about the main topics for that section. A list of materials needed for the lesson makes lesson-prep simple. Little animal-prints for the respective grade levels make it easy to see which information should be given to which student in a multi-grade environment. Lessons are semi-scripted with information to read aloud to students next to a set-apart margin that includes notes to the teacher. This guide also includes a variety of additional lesson helps and resources for use within the unit.
This book covers 6 weeks; the 6 volumes in the Paths of Settlement series together covers 1 year of instruction for Grades 4-6; an 'older extension' for students in Grades 7-8 is also available separately. Each book contains 6 units which each take approximately one week to complete, with one lesson designed to take one day.
Paths of Settlement is the second step in the 'Trail Guide to Learning' series from GeoMatters; the six units in this series are: Growing Pains, Freedom Decided, Nation Building, House Divided, Unity Restored, and Sea to Shining Sea. Paths of Exploration is the first step (6 units; Grades 3-5), which is followed by this Paths of Settlement series (6 units; Grades 4-6); the Paths of Progress (2 volume curriculum; Grades 5-7), and finally Journeys through the Ancient World (4 units; Grades 6-8) follow.
Please also note that additional books are required to use this curriculum. For a list of the required resources for each unit, please see the Book List PDF link above.
In addition to the core resources needed for each Paths of Settlement book (listed in the PDF) Unit 1 uses the following materials:

- Ambush in the Wilderness by Kris Hemphill
