Perhaps the best indication that Johann Oldecorp recorded an exciting truth when he wrote that Luther 'had many hearers' at his first lectures on the Psalms in 1513 is that almost immediately there was an urgent demand for printed copies of these lectures. But in spite of considerable effort toward a printed version of the lectures, in which Luther himself participated at least to the extent of working at readying the manuscript, the publication was never realized. In fact, these first lectures were not printed until 1885, when the Weimar edition of Luther's works published them on the basis of the only copies then extant, two newly discovered manuscripts by Luther himself, one for the glosses and one for the scholia.
