This is what motivated Kenneth Boa to write Cults, World Religions and the Occult.
Cults and world religions, particularly eastern religions, are growing rapidly, partially because of what they claim to offer, but also, more importantly, because of the failure of the church to meet the real needs that people have. Because of this rapid growth, more and more Christians are likely to have increasing contact with people from a cult. So what will you say if you have to interact with a cult member? If you know what that cult believes and the life they are trying to live, you will be able to reach out to them where they are.
This book is divided into four sections: section one looks at eastern religions that are spreading into the west; section two looks at the pseudo-Christian groups which started in the United States and claim a (tenuous)connection to Christianity; section three focuses on occult systems and religions; the fourth section examines new religions and cults. For each religion or cult, background information is given, followed by a biblical evaluation.
Boa also offers practical advice and principles for evangelism to cult members and adherents of other religions. The principles are based on 1 Peter 3:15, which tells us to 'sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account of the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.' Cults, World Religions and the Occult is a great reference tool, and it offers an extensive bibliography for further research. Use it for conversations with a particular group, or as a general base of information for all groups. Either way, through understanding, reverence, and gentleness, learn how to reach human hearts with the love of God, the only power that can satisfy the longing in their souls, even that longing which drove them to a cult in the first place.
