The 'SpellingYouSee' program from Demme Learning is a unique, research-based homeschool spelling curriculum with seven levels that follow the developmental stages of language development. Developed by Dr. Karen Holinga, this program allows students to develop spelling skills naturally and at their own pace with the direction and encouragement of the instructor. Relying upon visual memory that's built through repeated reading and repeated writing, students will learn spelling through short daily activities that integrate copywork, reading, speaking, and listening, rather than relying on rote memorization for weekly tests. Spelling You See Level B: Jack and Jill is designed to move your student from the Phonetic Stage into the third developmental stage of Skill Development (see the 'Spelling You See Philosophy' link for an explanation of each stage). Following stages, not grade level, this level is suggested for a developing reader who prints easily with lowercase letters and who knows most letter sounds, including long and short vowels. When determining placement, these are questions to ask: - Can my student focus on a worksheet for at least 10 minutes?
- Can my student focus on a worksheet for at least 10 minutes?
- Can my student write comfortably?
- Can my student give the sounds for most letters, including both long and short vowel sounds?
- Is my student beginning to read?
Jack and Jill will provide practice in writing individual letters and in hearing the sounds they make in simple words. It will also provide opportunities for students to study words in the context of nursery rhymes by marking letter patterns, copying words and passages, and writing from dictation. This course relies upon teacher instruction and this student workbook cannot be completed without the (sold-separately) Jack and Jill Instructor's Handbook. Thirty-six lessons focus on searching for common patterns in words, short vowels, correct letter formation, and consistent use of lower-case letters through the use of nursery rhymes. Lessons are divided into five parts (A through E); each part includes two daily worksheets. These lessons are split between two student workbooks; in Part I a new nursery rhyme is read each week, within which students find different details such as capitalization and punctuation. Part 2 continues the nursery rhyme theme, but now the instructor guides the student to find vowel and consonant patterns in each passage; students also begin more extended copywork. In Part I, the parent and student should read the left hand page together and then have the student copy the given words. The right-hand pages focus on letter formation, and students will trace or write letters in the letter boxes that are dictated by the parent. In Part 2, students write their own story, draw pictures of the nursery rhyme, mark vowel chunks in provided passages, and write longer passages from dictation. This Set Includes: SpellingYouSee B: Jack and Jill Student Workbook Part I: 183 pages, softcover. SpellingYouSee B: Jack and Jill Student Workbook Part II: 191 pages, softcover. Both are consumable, non-reproducible workbooks. One glossy handwriting chart - 8.5' x 11' One set of Crayola Erasable Colored Pencils (Set of 10)
