We are told to 'love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind' (Matt. 22:37). Uh, yeah, right, all your heart, soul and mind. Just exactly how does one do that? Particularly, how can I love God with my mind? Ever asked those questions? Philippians 4:8 tells us what to do ('think on these things'), but does not give advice on how or in what manner. And very few books have been written offering a viable answer. There are some, however, and James Sire's Discipleship of the Mind is one of the best.
Ultimately, the question becomes one of how 'we can learn to honor God in the ways we think,' and to answer that, one must first know what it means to honor God. For Sire, a large part of this is making sure that our attitudes about God are correct, i.e., that what we believe about God is based on God's revelation of His character in the Bible. Thus discipleship of the mind starts with a proper (biblical) understanding of wisdom and how fear (of the Lord) and humilty are related to that understanding.
The acquisition of wisdom, biblical wisdom, becomes the method and means for honoring God with one's mind. For biblical wisdom implies action and thought together, so that one's deeds in life are determined by one's worldview. So Sire sets out to describe what he understands as the worldview that best fits the biblical description, Christianity. The answers that Christianity has for various worldview questions become the basis for chapters about reality, human nature, and the meaning of human history. And the application becomes the impetus for chapters on techonology, learning, and cultural enterprises like literature and media.
Sire wants to engage your mind at every step of the process. Discipleship of the Mind is at once informative and practical, pointing us to greater action and devotion. Its bibliography is a wonderful tool for further study, which is, of course, one of the goals of the book. So join with Sire and begin the discipleship of your mind.
