There are, of course, many books addressing the concept of biblical love as it applies to any number of human relationships. But each of the emphases differs and for the most part remains broad. For example, books may focus on the biblical definition of love, or the concept of love in Paul or in the writings of John. But Piper's focus is more precise. He wants to focus on love as an ethical imperative or command as given by Christ and to examine the command with specific emphasis the object of love, namely, the enemy.
This focus became John Piper's dissertation topic in the early 1970s, and this book Love Your Enemies is the newest edition of that study. Formerly published in academic circles, this study is now available in an accessible format from Crossway and provides intensely focused study on just what Jesus had in mind when he commanded us to love our neighbor.
