As part of Mildred's recovery from a bout with ague, she travles with her uncle, Arthur Dinsmore Sr., to the Dinsmore home known as Roselands. There Mildred befriends the governness at Roselands and is befriended by Violet Travilla, the mother of Edward Travilla.
When Elise Dinsmore's guardian dies, Elsie is brought to Roslands. Her father still travels in Europe. Meanwhile, Mildred endures the heartbreak of loving Charlie Landreth, whom she cannot marry because he is not a Christian. Recommended for ages 10 to 14.
