Persomi's dreams are much grander than the world of poverty and deprivation that surround her in the Bushveld of the 1940s and 50s in South Africa. Persomi's world has been extraordinarily small living her entire life on the Fourie farm, never even making it to the local village. After her older brother leaves to fight in WWII and her best friend joins an underground network of Boer nationalist, Persomi is left alone in her tiny world. She dreams of an education, a profession, a native country that values justice, equality and love. Her world changes again as the tragedies of war and racial conflict of her homeland show her who she truly is, where she belongs, and why her life and every other life matters.
