Is suffering salvific? What is God's attitude toward and involvement with suffering? This work by Aloysius Rego explores these questions through the lens of Edward Schillebeeckx's later theology. While Schillebeeckx's earlier view of suffering centered almost exclusively on the individual and the personal, this emphasis shifted in his later theology due to a visit to the United States during the social upheaval of the 1960s and his encounters with the Frankfort School of critical theory.

Rego elucidates this change, beginning with an investigation of Schillebeeckx's earlier theology and then turning to his appreciation and critique of Adorno, Gaedemer, and Habermas. He then follows Schillebeeckx's thought through experience, types of suffering, and finally to Christology, the center of his theology. Erudite and careful, Rego's Suffering and Salvation not only provides a more nuanced understanding of Schillebeeckx but also reflects deeply on the relationship between our current displeasures and our future redemption. This volume is one of the Louvain Theological and Pastoral Monographs. Arising out of Louvain's long tradition of theological excellence within the Roman Catholic tradition at large, the volumes in this distinguished series express some of the finest reflection on current theology and pastoral practice.

Aloysius Rego is Australian regional vicar for the Discalced Carmelites.
