RightStart Mathematics is a comprehensive, unique, hands-on program that de-emphasizes counting, uses visualization of quantities, provides visual strategies for learning facts, and emphasizes problem solving. Students use the AL Abacus, which is the primary learning tool used in this curriculum, along with the MathCard Games (both sold-separately or included in the RS2 Math Kit) that provide repetition and review. RightStart Mathematics uses levels, not grade levels, so students can begin at whatever level best suits them; however, Level G is well-suited to grade 6-7. The new Second Edition features new approaches and techniques, and includes lessons and worksheets in an easier-to-teach format that incorporates updated research and more games- - - and which continues to advance and develop the conceptual understanding of critical math concepts. The Lesson Book is clearly organized; each lesson features objectives and a list of required materials, along with activities that are clearly explained with teacher notes & explanations to the right. The worksheets book provides worksheets to be completed or used alongside the manipulatives (not-included). The second edition RS2 Level G covers fractions, area, ratios, angles, the Pythagorean theorem, square roots, circles, pi, arcs, reflections, rotations, and symmetry through hands-on and visual teaching methods. Since the vast majority of middle school students are visual learners, approaching mathematics through geometry gives the student an excellent way to understand and remember concepts. Much of the work is done with a drawing board, T-square, 30-60 triangle, 45 triangle, a template for circles, and goniometer. These concepts are taught while students continue to practice arithmetic, fractions, and decimals. Some algebraic concepts are introduced and the history of mathematics is woven throughout the lessons. Level G is a two-year middle-school program; it is recommended that half-way through the lessons, families begin to weave in an algebra/pre-algebra program, which will slow the pace of work.
