This book examines both the Jewish and Christian experiences in establishing and maintaining their respective identities in the Greco-Roman world. In the wisdom books, we trace the development of Jewish reflection on the mystery and mastery of human life. Then we examine a diversity of books which helped Jews to identify the ideas, values and lifestyle which sustained their distinctively Jewish identity. Finally, we encounter New Testament texts which help Christians to create their unique identity as neither Jews nor Gentiles.
