This book by Christopher L. Webber presents seven complete vigil services inspired by the ancient monastic discipline of prolonged nighttime prayer and adapted to modern use. Included are several vigils in a traditional, more familiar mold: for Maundy Thursday, before Pentecost, for the sick, and at the time of death. Entirely new models are presented as well: 'A Vigil in the Presence of God' and 'A Vigil for Peace and Justice,' both of which may be used in times of community crisis or national emergency; and 'A Vigil before the Election or Ordination of a Bishop,' which may be adapted for deacons, priests, or lay ministers. Ample notes throughout explain the history of vigils and offer advice for planning 'private' vigils (individuals or small groups taking turns at prayer throughout the night) as well as large, public vigils.
