In this collection of essays, Benson and Heltzel attempt to demonstrate how alternative evangelical traditions can challenge the evangelical politics that have dominated the scene for years, and also to illuminate how effectively some evangelicals have challenged the United States' militaristic power in the recent past. They also seek to emphasize the differences (both ethnic and social) among evangelicals as a point of strength and to perpetuate the dialogue specifically concerning the politics of contemporary Pentecostals. In doing so, it is their desire to show that evangelicalism's theological basis actually requires a politics of liberation, and that evangelical groups have struggled against American militarism as well as for the liberation of ordinary Americans.
